Nick Davis’ Story

Three Generations of Award-Winning Filmmakers

Telling stories and making movies is part of the family DNA, and Nick Davis’ legacy is one of Hollywood legend.

Nick’s maternal grandfather, Herman Mankiewicz, was the larger-than-life Oscar-winning screenwriter who co-wrote Citizen Kane with Orson Welles. Among the other screenplays he wrote or worked on were Dinner at Eight, Duck Soup, Million Dollar Legs, Pride of the Yankees, and The Wizard of Oz. Herman’s younger brother was Joseph Mankiewicz, among whose films were A Letter To Three Wives, All About Eve, The Barefoot Contessa, and Cleopatra. Nick’s book Competing With Idiots, a dual biography of his grandfather and great-uncle, is forthcoming in August 2021, published by Knopf.

Nick’s father, Peter Davis, produced Hearts and Minds, a film about the Vietnam War, which won the Academy Award for Best Feature Documentary in 1975. Peter’s parents were the screenwriters Frank Davis and Tess Slesinger (A Tree Grows in Brooklyn).

From long format documentaries to short videos, Nick Davis continues the family tradition of crafting compelling human dramas on screens of all shapes and sizes. Nick remains on the cutting edge with award-winning films created at his Gramercy Park production studio in the heart of New York City.
